Review: Hot Club Of Cowtown - The Best of Hot Club Of Cowtown

Image
Listening to the 20-track anthology titled "The Best of Hot Club Of Cowtown" is like attending a western swing and jazz master class. This album more than proves why Hot Club Of Cowtown is a critical darling and a fan favorite. Yes, these talented musicians know how sing, play and entertain better than just about any artist working today. Hot Club Of Cowtown began as a duo when Elena James and Whit Smith discovered they had a mutual love of artists like Bob Wills, Joe Venuti, Stuff Smith, Eddie Lang, George Barnes and Django Reinhardt among others. So they moved from San Diego, California to Austin, Texas and added a base player to complete the group. One of the best tracks on the anthology is titled "I Can't Believe You're In Love With Me." The vocals have a casual elegance reminiscent of the popular music of the 1940s. The instrumentation perfectly compliments the carefully nuanced vocals. The upbeat "Forget-Me Nots" is another standout cut....

Review: Austin Cunningham - Made To Last

Image
You may not know the name Austin Cunningham, but you've certainly heard his music. Cunningham has been the writer or co-writer of songs recorded by his buddy Chris Knight, Big and Rich, Hank Williams, Jr, Dolly Parton, Faith Hill, Martina McBride and dozens of others. With his fourth album, "Made To Last," Austin Cunningham has produced 13 top-notch songs that cannot be ignored. As a singer-songwriter, Austin Cunningham is unique. He has an identifiable country voice that fully encapsulates the thoughts and feelings of everyday, working country men and women. The album's first cut, "This Town's On My Nerves" is illustrative of the frustration of many in these days of recession and job losses. Likewise, "Go Easy On Yourself" is a powerful anthem for people facing tough times. This song is a simple, but powerfully uplifting song that could be a country radio chart hit. The album's title track clearly shows the full range of Austin Cunnin...

Review: Doug Stone - Live At Billy Bob's Texas

Image
There's a good reason Doug Stone is a country music star: This man has a golden country voice that is unmistakably his own. With his 18-song, new album, "Live At Billy Bob's Texas," Doug Stone once again proves that he is a force to be reckoned with in country music. In short, Doug Stone's voice in 2009 is just as potent as it was when he first became a star. It is a pleasure and honor to revisit major Doug Stone country hits that dominated the country charts for so long. On "I Thought It Was You," Doug Stone puts a new spin on the classic song with subtle changes in his vocal phrasing. His deep, rich voice resonates with a passion that makes the song seem fresh and new. "Little Houses" is also given a small, but noticeable makeover that allows the lyrics to be heard in a new light. But the major success of "Live At Billy Bob's Texas" is the classic "Too Busy Being In Love." Doug Stone wisely chose to keep the winni...

Review: Mo Robson Band - Live At Adair's Saloon: Deep Ellum, Texas

Image
The Mo Robson Band is one hard-working group of Dallas guys. For almost a decade, Mo and the boys have been crisscrossing America with their hard-driving brand of Texas country music. And the 16 songs on "Live At Adair's Saloon: Deep Ellum, Texas" fully capture the magic of the band's hugely popular live shows while delivering top-notch production and pitch-perfect vocals. The album starts strong with the traditional country songs "Walkin' In My Shoes" and "Jim Beam Whiskey." But the live album at Dallas' famed Adair's Saloon really begins to hit its stride with the third song, the terrific Red Dirt track "First One To Go." This is followed by the memorable Texas music cut "Even Angels Fall." The Mo Robson Band's third album also features the song "Rolling Down This Highway," which is a genuinely roadworthy, Texas music masterpiece. The diversity of the Mo Robson Band - or MRB as they are affectio...

Review: T and C Miller (T-Roy Miller and Candace Kunz-Miller) - By Request

Image
T-Roy Miller and Candace Kunz-Miller make a memorable and important contribution to Texas country music with their stellar album "By Request." This instant cowboy classic features 12 original campfire songs expertly performed by T & C Miller. And this is one campfire jam that would make any country music lover drive the length of Texas to attend.T-Roy Miller is a country boy who was already successful when he met fellow country recording artist, Candace Kunz. Their love of music expanded to a love of each other, and the couple's marriage formed the country duo appropriately named T & C Miller. T-Roy and Candace are both top-notch country artists in their own right, and their professionalism and raw country talent are on full display. One of the best songs on the album is the track "Thanks For Putting Up With Me." This song features an understated and sincere performance by T-Roy who is singing a reflective song of thanks to his wife, Candace. She ans...

Review: Ben Kweller - Changing Horses

Image
The album "Changing Horses" is a revelation and a major surprise, because Ben Kweller is known as a critically acclaimed singer-songwriter and this is his first foray into country music. But "Changing Horses" proves that Kweller's first departure into country music should definitely not be his last. In fact, Ben Kweller's "Changing Horses" is an instant country classic. Growing up in a small East Texas town meant that Ben Kweller came naturally to country music because he he was surrounded by it. As a kid, Garth Brooks and Travis Tritt ruled the radio in Greenville, Texas. Kids in cowboy hats were as common in Greenville as taxis are in New York City. One of the finest songs on the album is the first single "Fight." Kweller's country vocals are perfect and the instrumentation rivals that of any country artist working today. One of the most unexpected elements of "Changing Horses" is the realization that Ben Kweller was ...

Review: Mike Runnels - Jukebox Boulevard

Image
He has the mysterious persona of Roy Orbison, a voice reminiscent of Hank Williams mixed with a little Billy Joe Shaver and music that is old-time, classic country. His name is Mike Runnels, and he's not out reinvent the wheel. You see, Mike Runnels' goal on "Jukebox Boulevard" is to showcase traditional country music. By the way, he's good at it. When you first listen to Mike Runnels, one word comes to mind: purity. His pure heart, pure emotion (as evidenced by his brilliant lyrics) and his pure, unadulterated love of his craft. With today's country music being inundated with "country pop" and bubble-gum lyrics, the traditional styling provided by "Jukebox Boulevard" is a breath of fresh air. On "Jukebox Boulevard," Runnels'  provides a wonderful tapestry of old-fashioned country aimed at country purists who love George Jones and Merle Haggard. One of the best songs on the album is "Just Kiss Me Again" which is ...

Enjoy A Drive With Jamie Richards

Image
We were pleasantly surprised to find a copy of Jamie Richards' fine 2007 release "Drive" waiting for us in the office mail last week. So, of course, we listened to the D Records release most of the day and were thrilled to hear that the third single from the album, "Back To Bein' Me," has been released to radio. This comes on the heels of Jamie's success with his title track,"Drive," which vaulted to Number One on the Texas Music Chart and the Texas Regional Radio Report earlier this year. As many of you know, Jamie Richards is an Oklahoma boy who grew up working on a dairy farm. We can't think of any finer upbringing for a future Texas country star who eventually found his way to Curb Records as a staff writer. Like the title from one of Jamie's songs, his life was a "Country Song Waiting To Happen." Jamie Richards is a traditional country artist who confidently sings the lyrics he writes while rejecting pop-influenced c...

ALBUM REVIEW: Old Crow Medicine Show - Tennessee Pusher

Image
Old Crow Medicine Show have relentlessly toured and made their name as a hardworking folk and old time-style country band with musicians who were influenced by the MTV generation. While "Tennessee Pusher" is a very good album, Old Crow Medicine Show's grueling tour schedule probably kept this album from actually being great. Although it didn't reach a level of greatness, the news is not all bad - quite the contrary. Famed producer Don Was (Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan) ensures that OCMS shines brightly, and the performances rendered are often reminiscent of the band's very famous and rollicking live shows. However, the tight production may have taken away some of the spontaneity of the band's previous albums. Nevertheless, "Tennessee Pusher" is a very good album indeed, and the band's influences of 1980s and 1990s radio is readily evident - and even surprising at times. Old Crow Medicine Show is not your dad's folk or country band. Songs ...

ALBUM REVIEW: Derek Sholl - Here

Image
Derek Sholl expected to have a career in baseball after being drafted by the Kansas City Royals, where he discovered his love of country music stars like Alan Jackson and Randy Travis. After an injury sidelined his baseball dreams, he got serious about a country music career and ended up with a successful Las Vegas country stage show. To top it off, he became a friend and opening act of Jay Leno at the Mirage. Derek Sholl's album "Here" features the former pro-baseball player's strong, polished vocals and songwriting skill. The album's title cut and current single seeks to showcase the classic country voice of Derek Sholl, and it succeeds. Like many new male country artists, the musical influence of Alan Jackson is also evident on some of the tracks. And that's a good thing. The hard- rockin ' "Pour Me A Double" is among the best songs on the album and gives listeners a glimpse of the power and energy they will find at Derek Sholl's ...

ALBUM REVIEW: Jason Allen - The Twilight Zone

Image
If real country music is what you want, then Jason Allen offers it up by the bucket load in his new album "The Twilight Zone."One of the unlikely standouts on the album is a cover of Stevie Wonder's "I Just Called To Say I Love You." Amazingly, Jason Allen makes the R&B track sound like a traditional country classic by crafting a smooth vocal performance combined with great country musicianship from the band. It is Jason Allen's pure country voice that makes him shine brighter as a country star than many of his contemporaries. Allen never struggles to hit the right note and his vocals never seem strained. It's like Allen is channeling the voice of George Strait from the 1980s or early 1990s. One other major success on the album is the track "He's Still Dancing With Her" which Allen wrote after watching his father on the dance floor. It's a touching and genuine song that pays tribute to the successful partnership that heavily i...

ALBUM REVIEW: Billy Joe Shaver - Everybody's Brother

Image
On " Everybody's Brother," Billy Joe Shaver sings: "If you don't love Jesus, go to hell." This is certainly a fitting sentiment for the country gospel themed album titled " Everybody's Brother" which features Shaver on his own and with country music luminaries such as Johnny Cash, Tanya Tucker, John Anderson, Kris Kristofferson and Marty Stuart. Even though Shaver has some powerful duet partners on the album, it is Billy Joe Shaver's solo performance of his classic "When I Get My Wings" that still sends a shiver down the spine. And the aforementioned and rocking "If You Don't Love Jesus" also shows that Shaver is still an outlaw at heart. No one ever said life was easy for Billy Joe Shaver. He lost a few fingers in a lumber mill accident. Since then, he has had more family and personal issues than virtually any of his contemporaries. The song "No Earthly Good" resonates with its strong lyrics an...

ALBUM REVIEW: The Oak Ridge Boys "It's Only Natural" (Cracker Barrel exclusive)

Image
The Oak Ridge Boys teamed up with the fine folks at Cracker Barrel to produce an exclusive album with 5 brand new songs and a load of other favorites. While the 12-track album dropped a few months ago, there is no greater Mother's Day or Father's Day gift than "It's Only Natural" from the Oak Ridge Boys. The album begins with "What'cha Gonna Do," which has an upbeat, melodic sound that deserves to be a major country chart hit for the Oak Ridge Boys. "Before I Die" is another new song that has radio potential. The sincerity of the vocal performance is mesmerizing. "The Shade" has much of the same charm. However, the best new song on the album is "Wish You Could Have Been There." The song has cultural relevance and an uplifting chorus that is both memorable and heartwarming. The bluegrass infused "Sacrifice … For Me" brings the Oak Ridge Boys back to their country roots, and the story in song has a politic...

ALBUM REVIEW: Drake Jensen "On My Way To Finding You"

Image
Drake Jensen has a deep country voice that could just as easily come out of El Paso, Texas rather than the island of Cape Breton in Nova Scotia, Canada - where he was born and raised. Nevertheless, the country crooner is on his way to finding his own country music dream with his surprisingly accomplished new album "On My Way To Finding You." The album's first single "Wash Me Away" received a music award, and the track has a hard-driving beat with a memorable melody. The new single "All You Need" will please traditional country fans, and it actually has a retro-cool George Strait meets Mickey Gilley vibe. The album's first cut, "Where You Goin' With That" actually sets the perfect tone for the Drake Jensen album, and the Canadian who recently moved to Ontario showcases his deep throaty vocals. The album's production quality is also stellar. The next track, "I'm Here To Love You" also could draw comparisons to th...

Review: David Serby "Poor Man's Poem"

Image
If political folk maverick Woody Guthrie were alive today, he probably would be inclined to go to iTunes and download David Serby's new album "Poor Man's Poem." However, Serby would likely feel so honored that he would give Guthrie a few cases of CDs for free. David Serby's first song, the title track "Poor Man's Poem," takes its cue from the musical heritage of the past, and Serby's folksy style belies the serious message of his thought provoking lyrics. The next cut, the quiet "A Love Song From Miguel," offers a laid-back tale of love that is smooth like butter. The song "Lay Down My Colt" blends folk and elements of cowboy country with remarkable success, but it is the story in song "Sugar Creek" that is the album's biggest surprise. The instrumentation is perfect, and David Serby's vocals are delivered in a half-spoken/half-sung manner that works. Political folk comes easy to David Serby because h...

Review: Tejas Brothers "Rich Man"

Image
Middle class men, dirt poor men and, yes, even the top one-percent can't help but love the new release "Rich Man" from the artistic and always entertaining quartet called the Tejas Brothers. The Tex-Mex masters showcase their full range of emotions in an album that will make you blissfully happy from start to finish. The CD begins with the easy-going "Say It Again" and is followed by the equally pleasing Randy Newman-esque cut "Diamond In The Rough." The latter track is musical perfection with terrific instrumental interludes. The Tex-Mex quotient rises with the upbeat "This Little Feeling" and the passionately-performed cut titled "The Castle." However, it is the immensely hummable "Wiggle" that offers the fun that the Tejas Brothers are known for most. The bluesy "Long Way To Texas" is a winner, but the track "How I've Been" is the album's best musical moment. This heartfelt story in s...

Review: Jed Dunkin "Dixie To Detroit City"

Image
If suave seduction and subtle melodies are your favorite country music elements, then stay far, far away from the first two tracks of Jed Dunkin's new album "Dixie To Detroit City." You see, the imposing, never-bashful Dunkin is a brash bucket of country music fun that is destined to delight fans of Waylon and Willie while disappointing supporters of Gloriana and Jewel. That's a good thing. The 8-song album begins with the hard-driving "Dixie To Detroit City" that is passionately performed. The more traditional sing-a-long track "Family BBQ" is like mustard potato salad at a church picnic - a little bit tart at first but smooth and sweet going down. Jed Dunkin manages to show his gospel side with the terrific "Waltz Across Heaven." Likewise, "Daddy's Song" and Come On Home" should be favorites with country gospel fans as well. The final track "Wouldn't Change This" shows another side of Jed Dunkin an...
